California Sea lion
Zalophus californianus (Lesson, 1828)
Look at this skeleton.
Think back at the lion and the cheetah. What differences do you observe? What else do you see?
It has short upper arm bones, very short thy bones, long fingers and toes, broad hands and feet.
What kind of a runner is it? It is no runner at all, it is a clumsy walker. But when it extends the legs to the rear its feet form a configuration that resembles the tail of a whale. That makes it an excellent swimmer. And what can you say about the arms? The arms are very suitable for steering.
